In mid 1982, at a time when comics were still seen as a niche hobby, three passionate fans Denny & Ann Stevenson along with Donnie Edwards decided to take a leap of faith and purchased AC Davis Books. Fueled by their love for storytelling, superheroes, and the joy of collecting, they opened the doors to a small but ambitious comic shop in the heart of Florence, SC. They called it Legends Comics—a name that would, over time, become exactly that in the local community.
From the very beginning, Legends was more than just a place to buy the latest issues of X-Men or Batman. It became a gathering spot—a local sanctuary for readers, collectors, gamers, and daydreamers. Whether you were chasing a rare back issue or just needed a place to talk about the latest Marvel twist, Legends was the place to be.
For decades, Denny and Ann Stevenson were the heart and soul of the store, with Donnie Edwards helping shape its early years. Their knowledge, kindness, and enthusiasm built a loyal following that spanned generations. Denny, in particular, was known for his encyclopedic comic book knowledge and his genuine connections with customers, many of whom became lifelong friends and eventual right hand people at the store including, Donnie Wiggins, who would be a tremendous help in the coming years.
Legends quickly became more than a shop, it was a community hub. Whether you were a diehard collector searching for that elusive X-Men back issue, or a curious kid picking up your first comic with allowance money, you were welcomed like family. Denny hosted events, Ann organized things, and Donnie somehow knew everyone’s pull list by heart. Over the years, Legends Comics weathered the ups and downs of the industry—from the collector boom of the '90s to the digital wave of the 2000s—but through it all, it never lost its soul.
When Denny passed away in December 2016, it was a heartbreaking moment for the Legends Comics family. But his vision and legacy lived on. In the years that followed, Ann continued to hold the store together with love and dedication and in May of 2017 for the Grand Re-Opening she turned the store operations over to J Harrison and Donnie Wiggins, who stepped in to help guide Legends Comics into its next chapter while honoring its roots.
Today, Legends Comics stands as a cornerstone of Florence pop culture, a place where stories live, heroes rise, and fans of all ages come to celebrate the magic of comics by not only being the oldest comic book store in South Carolina but also as a living tribute to the community that built it—and to the man who helped bring it to life.
From 1982 to today, and beyond—the Legend continues.
